RSV is picking up again

In clinic this morning we saw three toddlers before 10 a.m. with that tight, wheezy cough; I know it’s scary, so I’m coaching parents to push fluids, use nasal saline with gentle suction, and run a cool-mist humidifier, while watching for fast breathing, ribs pulling in, or lips looking dusky as reasons to be seen urgently. What’s worked for your family to help a little one rest through the night?

looking dusky as reasons to be seen urgently… What’s worked for your family to help a little We do saline, wait 30 seconds, then NoseFrida only before feeds and bedtime — too much suction made my kid’s nose swell, and a cool-mist humidifier by the crib helped a ton. If the cough tightened at night, a minute on the porch in cool air settled it, and we skip any oils in the humidifier.

My take: I’d lean toward the simplest next step and see if it changes anything this week — if not, you’ve got a clear case to escalate. What would block you from trying that?

When ours had RSV, the only way we could ‘push fluids’ was Pedialyte pops or tiny homemade ice pops; the cold calmed the cough enough to sip more. We’d offer them 20–30 minutes before naps and bedtime — not right before — or the coughing spiked; @OP the ‘cool-mist humidifier’ helped, but the pops were the game-changer.

Building on @mitch_davis92, quick steamy bathroom pre-saline/suction, then syringe sips to ‘push fluids’; skip if irritating.
